Memorandum from the USA to the Chief Advisor on Environmental Protection

The pulse is pounding, so the eyes of the expatriates are always on their beloved motherland. Even though they are physically abroad, everyone's mind is on the hometown where they grew up. Therefore, the expatriates are also concerned about the endangered environment due to industrialization, unplanned urbanization and development, illegal encroachment on rivers, canals and water bodies, pollution, deforestation and climate change. Such concerns have been expressed in the memorandum sent to the country's Chief Advisor on Environmental Protection, Dr. Muhammad Yunus.

Out of love and affection for the land, the environmentalist organization of the US expatriates, “Dharitri Rakhay Amara-Dhara USA,” signed this memorandum through the Bangladesh Consulate in New York on September 11. Selina Uddin, coordinator of Dhara USA, handed over the memorandum to Consul General Mohammad Mozammel Haque.

The main demands of the memorandum include taking special programs to protect the Sundarbans, haor and hilly areas. Preventing deforestation by increasing the use of alternative and green fuels. Including environmental education in the education curriculum and increasing awareness by involving local administration and media.

In addition, the memorandum mentions that the government should seriously consider the recommendations of the expatriates to ensure a strong position in the UN Global Forum on Climate and Environment this month.

17 expatriate Bangladeshis signed the memorandum under the leadership of Selina Uddin, coordinator of Dhara USA. Mohammad was also present during the handover of the memorandum. Moiz Uddin, journalist Ibrahim Chowdhury Khokon, Abu Taher, Rashida Akhtar, Syed Utba, Apel Mahmud.

Receiving the memorandum, Consul General Mohammad Mozammel Haque said that the expatriates have come forward to protect the environment, this is a commendable initiative. Any small step taken by the government, private sector or individual can play a big role in protecting the environment. He said that drinking water in glass glasses has already started in the Bangladesh Secretariat instead of plastic bottles. He mentioned that there is an opportunity to start this in the consulate office as well.
